When we have an aquarium, we expect to enjoy the beauty of the fish. We understand that only fish and selected plants live in the aquarium. On the other hand, there are several other invertebrates that shelter with your fish as well. For instance, there are invertebrates that live on your plants when brought from the store. Some of these animals may be beneficial to the aquarium; there are some which are not so kind to your tank.Hydra Hydra is very similar to small sea anemones. Hydra is in the family of phylum Cnidaria. They don’t have eyes. The colors range from green to brown. They can attach to almost any plants in the aquarium. This also includes decorations, rocks, gravel, and the glass. Hydras are carnivorous; they will eat any animal they can fit in their mouth. Hydras can shoot stingers to their prey and hunt them down.
If there are good source of live food, hydras will do very well. Please note that small fries are great prey for hydras. Moss Animal Bryozoans are another word for moss animal. They are made of groups of zooids. They relatively live in groups and don’t last very long. These colonies will not only grow, but will produce statoblasts, which functions as a genderless form of reproduction. Planaria Planaria are in the group of flatworms called Turbellaria. The colors of Planaria can be white, green, brown, and several others patterns. They have a head-like area that is arrow-head shaped, with eye spots. Planaria swim across the aquarium surface.
They will eat any live animals that are near the surface. Planaria are known to produce large populations. Planaria may appear if poor water changes, poor filtration occurs. Similar to Hydra, they can eat small fry. Leeches Leeches are mostly attached to plants and weeds. They have suckers at the end of their body. Leeches are various colorations. Beware that leeches appears in live food as well. Leeches can get large and may bite if mistreated.
